Match Recap: Vikings Earn Hard-Fought Victory Over University of Victoria in Canada

Posted:
January 26, 2026

Western Washington University Rugby enjoyed an outstanding weekend in White Rock, British Columbia, highlighted by strong performances from both squads and ideal January conditions. With brisk sunshine and clear skies—rare for this time of year—the stage was set for a memorable set of matches.

First, our apologies regarding the live stream. George Jelley worked incredibly hard to make it happen, but unfortunately, the signal strength just wasn’t strong enough to sustain a reliable broadcast. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding. We are working to make this available for every game!

The weekend carried added significance as the matches were played on the same fields where WWU’s Director of Rugby, Mr. Horne, taught Head Coach, Adam Roberts, the game of rugby. Seeing the Vikings compete on those historic grounds created a meaningful full-circle moment and reinforced the deep roots connecting the program to the region’s rugby culture.

WWU’s Second XV opened the weekend against UBC Okanagan, a quality side that represented Canada West at the National Championships in Quebec earlier this season. The Vikings started the match with energy and intent, striking first through an early try from Jaden Grace. While UBCO’s structured, sustained style kept Western under pressure for long stretches, the progress from the previous week’s match against Trinity Western was evident. The group continues to gain valuable experience and confidence, showing clear growth in composure and execution against high-level opposition.

The First XV followed with a hard-fought contest against the University of Victoria, a storied program with more than six decades of rugby tradition. Known for their expansive, attacking style, UVic presented a demanding tactical challenge, particularly through their kicking game and use of space. Despite missing several starters, Western embraced the opportunity for younger players to step into key roles. What followed was a true character performance, as the Vikings controlled possession, defended under sustained pressure, and supported one another through critical moments. Their resilience paid off with a narrow but deserved 17–15 victory, showcasing grit, patience, and collective belief.

While pleased with the results, the weekend also highlighted areas for continued development. Finishing plays under pressure, tightening handling, and maintaining execution across the full 80 minutes remain points of focus as the season progresses. Managing both the physical and mental demands of high-level competition will be key as the group continues to mature.

Overall, the weekend reinforced the positive trajectory of the program. Western Washington University Rugby represented the university with pride both on and off the field, demonstrating growth, resilience, and a commitment to competing at the highest level.

The Vikings now turn their attention to another demanding weekend ahead, with the First XV traveling to face Cal Poly while the Second XV returns to Canada to take on Bayside RFC U23s—continuing a stretch of challenging matches designed to accelerate development across the program."
