Western Washington University Men’s Rugby opened the semester with a high-level test on January 17th, taking on perennial powerhouse Trinity Western University in a hard-fought contest that ultimately ended in a 36–19 result. The match was played on a beautiful day and in a competitive environment.
WWU rose to the challenge early and, throughout the contest, traded blows with a program known for its tactical precision and composure. The Vikings put together strong passages of play and showed they belonged at this level, holding a narrow 19–18 lead with just 17 minutes remaining. In the closing stages, Trinity Western’s experience and tactical kicking game proved decisive, creating field position and pressure that ultimately swung the match in their favor.
While the final score didn’t reflect the effort or growth shown, the performance marked an important step forward. Western was challenged in multiple areas of the game and embraced those moments as opportunities to learn. Competing against an opponent of this caliber reinforced both the standard required and the progress already being made.
"I LOVED watching us play at this level and proved we can do it!" said Head Coach, Adam Roberts.
Most importantly, the match affirmed belief within the group. Western proved they can compete at this level, play with confidence, and go toe-to-toe with elite opposition. These are the games that shape a season, and this experience will serve as a foundation as the Vikings continue to grow, refine, and push toward their goals.
