The Western Washington University Men's Rugby Vikings traveled to Iowa City last weekend for the 2026 CRAA D1AA Men's 7s National Championships. Over two days of fast, physical rugby, the Vikings posted a 3–2 record, highlighted by a dominant performance against the University of Missouri and a hard-fought victory over the host University of Wyoming, before falling to a strong University of Oregon side in their final match of the tournament.
The Vikings wasted no time making an impression on Day 1.
The tournament opener was a masterclass. The Vikings came out with the high-octane, high-tempo brand of rugby that has become their calling card under Head Coach Adam Roberts, running in tries at will and shutting Missouri out completely. The 41–0 scoreline sent an early message to the rest of the field.
The Vikings ran into a battle against the University of Iowa, a program they know well from the national stage. A narrow 14–10 defeat in a tightly contested match was a reminder that at this level, margins are thin. The loss stung, but the character shown in a close fight against a top-tier opponent set the tone for what was to come.
WWU responded emphatically. The Vikings regrouped and delivered a composed, clinical performance to close out Day 1 with a convincing 31–14 win over UHSP, finishing the day 2–1 and firmly in the mix heading into Sunday.
Sunday morning brought a sharp performance to open the day. The Vikings dominated the University of Wyoming 24–5 in a win that showcased their fitness and finishing.
The tournament ended with a tough final result against the University of Oregon, who proved too strong on the day with a 28–5 victory. The Ducks were well-organized and clinical, and this late-tournament matchup highlighted areas where the Vikings will look to sharpen their edge heading into the fall.

The 2026 CRAA D1AA 7s National Championships served as another valuable proving ground for a WWU program on the rise. With 111 points scored over the weekend against D1AA national competition, the Vikings' offensive firepower and depth are evident. The results against Iowa and Oregon will sharpen the focus — both teams represent the standard WWU is chasing.
The Vikings will be back — and they'll be better for the miles logged in Iowa City.
