Western Washington University Men’s Rugby closed out a demanding four-match road stretch last Saturday with a challenging contest away at Oregon State University. While the final result did not fall in the Vikings’ favor, the match provided valuable lessons and moments that reflected the team’s continued growth early in the 2026 season.
The game proved difficult to settle into from the outset, with eight penalties called in the opening 6 minutes and 40 seconds, disrupting rhythm and momentum. Combined with wet conditions, the match became a physical slog, reflected in a reduced ball-in-play time of 25:14—significantly lower than the 39:42 recorded in last season’s matchup against USD. Despite these challenges, when play did open up, Western showed its attacking potential, scoring well-constructed tries that highlighted composure, field awareness, and the ability to play in the right areas.
Following an intense opening stretch of the season, the 1XV will now benefit from a well-earned down week to recover, reset, and prepare for the next phase of competition. Meanwhile, the 2XV turns its attention north, traveling to Coquitlam, Canada, for a highly anticipated rematch against United RFC. After a narrow loss in the fall, the upcoming fixture presents an opportunity for redemption and a benchmark to measure the group’s development.
The Vikings return home on February 21 for a significant day for the program, hosting a high school camp followed by a home match against Central Washington University. The event marks an important opportunity to showcase the growth, culture, and competitiveness of WWU Rugby as the season continues.
"Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our players and the team. It truly makes a difference, especially during stretches like this." Said Head Coach, Adam Roberts. "We’re excited about the direction we’re heading and look forward to having you with us as we continue the journey."
The road has been demanding, but the foundation is being built—one match at a time.
