The final Saturday of May brought classic Pacific Northwest weather—steady rain and a perfect pitch—for the annual WWU Rugby Alumni Game at the scenic deWilde Rugby and Polo Fields. Despite the drizzle, the atmosphere was electric as a record number of alumni returned to reconnect with teammates and relive the camaraderie that defines Western Rugby.
The event provided a spirited clash between the current squad and a seasoned group of former Vikings, many of whom are still active in competitive rugby. The undergraduate team entered the match with confidence, coming off another NCRC Championship season, but knew they’d be tested by alumni featuring recent graduates and long-time standouts alike.
Wiatt Vasay (Class of 2017) officiated the match with a light touch, allowing for a fast-paced and open contest. The result? A thrilling game featuring over 100 points scored and twelve tries between the two sides. Alumni players Max Stone and Kyle Peter (both Class of 2024) put in standout performances, while Aiden Kerr—fresh off a season with Major League Rugby’s Houston SaberCats—was a constant threat throughout the match.
Other notable appearances included WWU legends Joe Spring, Parmvir Rai, and the ever-durable Micah Bartlett, along with a crowd-pleasing cameo from former head coach Tripp Moratto.
A special thank-you goes to the Western Rugby Alumni (WRA) for sponsoring the event, and to Chuckanut Bay RFC for graciously hosting another memorable installment of this beloved tradition.
Final Score: WWU 70 – Alumni 35
