Western Washington University Rugby took on one of its most ambitious weekends yet, fielding three squads across three locations at the same time, with two coaches at each site. It was new ground for the program, and the Vikings came away with two wins, a narrow loss, and game time up and down the roster.
“Three games in three locations, two wins, and a whole lot to be proud of,” said head coach Adam Roberts. “This is what building a program is all about.”
Weekend Results
D1A: WWU 47, UVIC 28
The D1A squad opened with a convincing 47-28 win over UVIC, scoring tries of every kind. The Vikings produced a push-over scrum try, a lineout maul, and several well-worked team tries. Roberts said the side is still finding its rhythm early in the season, with defense and tackling the focus for the week ahead. “A great result and plenty to build on,” he said.
NCRC: WWU 27, United RFC 30
The NCRC side fell just short in a 27-30 result against United RFC. The squad was hit hardest by illness moving through the group but battled from start to finish, stringing together strong attacking phases. Roberts said the game was there to be won and that defensive organization and tackling will be the priority this week.
NCRC Development: WWU 37, 12
The NCRC Development squad closed the weekend with a 37-12 win and a strong all-around performance. The result points to a growing pathway, with younger players getting valuable minutes and building confidence.
Looking Ahead
The Vikings are right back on the road. This weekend the D1A squad travels to Tucson to face Arizona, while the NCRC group heads to Oregon State for two games.
WWU also debuted sharp new jerseys this weekend, with thanks to sponsors Puff Coffee and Kulshan Brewery.
