Match Recap: WWU Rugby Turns Challenge Into Celebration

What began as an unexpected setback became one of the most memorable weekends in Western Washington University Men’s Rugby history. When Grand Canyon University’s travel issues forced a last-minute cancellation, the Vikings and the WWU community didn’t let the disappointment define the day. Instead, they transformed it into something extraordinary.

WWU quickly organized a showcase event at Harrington Field—and the atmosphere was electric. A live band kicked things off with a roaring rendition of “Burn It to the Ground” by Canada’s very own Nickelback, sending waves of energy through the crowd. Families, alumni, supporters, and students packed the sidelines, creating a powerful sense of community and proving once again that Viking Rugby pride runs deep. Thanks to the efforts of our players, staff, and volunteers, the day turned into a celebration of resilience, unity, and the growing strength of the program.

On Saturday, the 2XV took center stage against United RFC, who traveled down from Canada ready for a battle. Fans were treated to a fast-paced, high-drama matchup that ended in a tight 38–31 finish. While the coaching staff knows there were moments left on the field—and a win within reach—they were incredibly proud of the grit, heart, and intensity the group played with. The growth since the UVic match was clear, and this team continues to evolve with every challenge. Their passion, work rate, and commitment to one another were unmistakable.

Now the Vikings turn their attention to a defining week: the final stretch of the first half of the season and a rivalry clash with the University of Washington. It’s a chance to sharpen standards, raise expectations, and continue pushing toward long-term goals. Great teams are built in moments like these—in the discipline of training, in the hunger to improve, and in the desire to finish strong.
