What a weekend it was for Western Washington University Rugby at the West Coast 7’s Regionals! Facing some of the toughest competition in the country, the Vikings rose to the occasion and showed both resilience and progress throughout the tournament.
The team opened pool play against a strong Long Beach State side, coming out with intensity and even holding the lead at times. However, a few costly mistakes at the contact area shifted momentum, and the match ultimately slipped away. It was a tough start, but one that provided valuable lessons.
In their second game, the Vikings squared off against the reigning national champions, Cal – Berkeley. Despite the formidable challenge, WWU played with heart and determination, keeping the pressure on and showing noticeable improvement from their first outing. The result didn’t tilt their way, but the growth from game one to game two was clear.
By the third match, everything clicked. The Vikings delivered a commanding 35–0 victory over San Diego State, dominating from start to finish. It was a statement win—clinical, composed, and a strong reflection of the high standards the team is building toward.
This weekend reinforced one crucial takeaway: at the highest level of rugby, every mistake carries weight. Yet, it also proved that WWU Rugby belongs on this stage. The boys demonstrated they can compete with the best, and more importantly, that they are committed to getting better every game.
We’re incredibly proud of the fight, growth, and resilience the Vikings displayed. The West Coast 7’s marked another important step forward in what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
