It was another outstanding weekend for Western Washington University Rugby, as the Vikings showcased their growing depth, commitment, and culture by fielding two squads in two different locations against top-tier opponents. Both matches reflected the strength and unity of the program while providing valuable lessons and experiences for every player involved.
The 2XV traveled north to face the University of Victoria, one of the most storied and skilled rugby programs in Canada. The match offered an incredible opportunity for growth—a true test of rugby IQ, execution, and composure under pressure. Though the scoreboard didn’t swing in Western’s favor, the experience proved invaluable. UVic’s pace, precision, and structure provided a masterclass in high-level rugby and reinforced how discipline and decision-making can match physicality. The Vikings battled hard and left the island with a deeper understanding of what it takes to compete at an elite level. These lessons will no doubt strengthen the group as the season progresses.
Meanwhile, the 1XV headed east to Ellensburg to take on Central Washington University for the Cascade Cup, one of the most anticipated fixtures of the fall. The team came in prepared, having trained with focus and intensity all week—and it showed. From the opening kickoff, Western dictated the pace of play, applying relentless defensive pressure and maintaining composure in key moments.
By halftime, the Vikings held a 32–14 lead, demonstrating confidence and control on both sides of the ball. Western’s attack was clinical, producing seven tries, five conversions, and two penalty goals, finishing with an impressive 51 total points. Leading the charge was George Pritchard, who turned in a standout performance, scoring 21 points on a try, two penalty goals, and five conversions. The forwards established dominance up front, creating space for the backs to strike with precision and creativity.

Final Score: WWU 51 CWU 14
This performance was more than just a strong showing—it was historic. The victory marked WWU’s first-ever win over Central Washington since the Cascade Cup was introduced in 2013. Central Washington had previously claimed the trophy in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2018, making this a milestone victory for the Vikings. It was a proud and defining moment for the program, built on hard work, belief, and trust in each other.
The entire WWU Rugby community can be proud of how the Vikings represented the team both on and off the field. The lessons learned and the victories earned this weekend are powerful reminders that Western Rugby’s foundation is strong—and the future is brighter than ever.
