This past Saturday marked the first full hit-out of the year for WWU Rugby, as the Vikings faced off in a friendly matchup against the University of Washington at the picturesque deWilde Rugby Fields. Surrounded by vibrant fall colors, it was the perfect backdrop for an afternoon of physical, high-energy rugby that showcased the team’s depth and determination.
The game was played across four 30-minute periods, allowing every player a chance to contribute. More than 50 players took the field, including several who proudly made their first-ever appearance in a rugby match—an exciting milestone for both the athletes and the program.
From the first whistle, WWU brought unmatched intensity. Coaches and spectators alike were impressed by the team’s physical dominance, with UW’s coaching staff noting that they had never seen a Viking side play with such force and presence. That physicality translated into some electrifying moments, featuring sharp offloads, strong support lines, and several outstanding tries that reflected the team’s growing cohesion and confidence.
Beyond the match, the program continues to invest in player development and wellbeing. This week, the team will host a sports nutritionist to discuss fueling for performance and recovery, followed by a physiotherapist session offering individualized assessments and injury prevention guidance.
The Vikings now shift their focus toward their next challenge—a trip to Eugene in two weeks to take on Oregon. With strong momentum and a clear commitment to improvement, WWU Rugby is building early-season excitement for what’s shaping up to be a promising campaign.
