There has been lots of stuff happening since the boys got back from the USA Rugby National Collegiate Men’s Rugby Championship held at Bowling Green University in Bowling Green, Ohio. ( I think there is supposed to be a “Fly Emirates” somewhere in that long title as well, but I could barely get the rest of it typed without taking a break let along including “Fly Emirates”).
The weekend after we got back there was the 1st Annual Navy & White Dinner and Auction which was sponsored by the Men’s Rugby Alumni Association. And I will tell you that if you didn’t make that event, you missed a beauty.
The event was organized and put together by Event Chairman Jeff Lombard, his wife, Dee Dee, Coach Paul Horne, his wife Robin, Alumni Ned Kennedy, his wife Kay, Bev Preston, and Taylor Lombard. These people did an amazing job and everything worked pretty close to perfect.
There were no major melt-downs or problems, there were over 130 people in attendance at Settlemeyer Hall on the campus of Bellingham Technical College, and it looks we pulled in somewhere in the neighborhood of $15,000 for the Alumni Association which means we’ll begin next year in the black.
A special thanks goes to Denny and Linda Howson who organized and oversaw the operation of the registration/checkout tables.
And another special thanks to the players from this year’s team who served as waiters, helpers, and runners throughout the night. It was a great chance for the players to meet the alumni and friends who had supported them all year and for all those alumni and friends to put a face with a name.
Make plans to attend next year, it really was a hoot and great to see so many Western alums, parents, and friends supporting the WWU Men’s Rugby Club program.
