Western Wins At Simon Fraser

November 4, 2012

The WWU 2nd XV, the Boatmen, traveled to Vancouver, BC to take on the Simon Fraser University Clansmen yesterday looking to avenge the 7 – 5 defeat suffered at the hands of the Clansmen during last Saturday’s visit to Bellingham.

Western had a good week of practice and were eager to head north for the return match, taking 22 players with them, along with a good number of the Viking squad who weren’t scheduled to play this weekend.

The crew got to Vancouver and the weather wasn’t any different than the previous week…it was raining, coming down in buckets.  It was a classic rainy November, Pacific Northwest rugby day.

Learning from their mistakes the previous weekend, the Boatmen battled the Clansmen to a 0 – 0 first half tie and after some halftime discussion and a couple of substitutions, they took control of the match and scored two trys.  Ryan Lilla and Jess Harris scored for the Boatmen and Nick Solimano converted both and the Boatmen ended up winning 14 – 0.

Western’s “Man of The Match” was Daniel Bonner, who was, according to one of the coaches, “…a horse…”.

This next weekend, Veteran’s Day weekend, November 10, is Parent’s Day.  All Parents are invited to campus to watch the intra-squad match, the Blue – Grey game, and then attend a dinner at the Viking Commons.

Speaking at the dinner will be Director of Rugby and Head Coach Paul Horne as well as Head 7’s Coach, Adam Roberts.

So plan on coming to Bellingham for the day, the match will kick-off at 1 pm, and then stick around for the social and dinner, meet your son’s teammates and parents, and meet and talk to the coaches.

Join us on our way to the top!
